First, you need to wait for the patch to fix hiring mercs. Stay lvl 1 til then if you can as at lvl 2 the cost is 2000 per hire. As far as what to build, fill the empty niche in your party. Personally I think Valeria is useless, as she is a paladin who is out of alignment, so just a standard fighter but still has paladin stats.

If you have active shared exp on in the options everyone recieves the exact same amount of exp regardless of party size.
