Playhouse History. The Des Moines Community Playhouse was founded in 1919 by members of the Iowa Press and Authors Club. Although the Little Theatre Movement was causing similar enterprises to spring up across the country, The Playhouse is unique in that it has operated continuously, under various names and in various homes, since its founding. The Playhouse has an extensive education department, providing classes for all ages, opportunities through Spectrum Stories and the national Penguin Project (beginning in 2022), and outreach programs for schools and community centers. The Playhouse is one of the largest and oldest continuously-operating theatres in the United States. GiGi’s Playhouse is a volunteer-run organization and we rely on the skill and dedication of volunteers of various levels of expertise to keep our programs vibrant, educational, purposeful, fun, and free.
